The Project
Ramblers, a century-old advocate for UK countryside access, needed to modernise its digital systems. Supported by People’s Postcode Lottery and Sports England, it sought unified data solutions. Tap CXM worked with Ramblers to build an operational data warehouse, helping it achieve strategic goals and boost member engagement.
The Challenge
When we crossed paths with Ramblers, the charity was at the start of a digital transformation journey. Eventually, they would overhaul a lot of back-end and public-facing systems. There were several reasons why the legacy systems needed an update:
- Siloed data hindered reporting and real-time decision-making across digital platforms.
- Data needed to move between platforms, e.g. for personalised communication and member authentication.
- Disconnected systems meant that data wasn’t being operationalised, only collected.
- Lack of insights in reporting, meaning a lack of insights into overall business performance.
Tap CXM designed and implemented an operational data warehouse (ODW) to connect Ramblers’ CRM, email tools, website, and app. Using Talend as the ETL tool, the ODW enabled real-time data flows with minimal manual upkeep. This enabled Ramblers to streamline a lot of things that used to be clunky, if not impossible. Member authentication, managing user uploads, personalising website experiences, surfacing database information, giving real-time app feedback.
The ODW transformed Ramblers’ data management from a passive warehouse to an active processing system. It supports member authentication, surfaces insights for better decisions, and handles overlapping records. With minimal maintenance, Ramblers can now leverage data to drive strategic growth.
We also developed a Tableau reporting system that moved Ramblers’ customer insights into the modern age. More than reporting, Tableau (combined with the ODW solution and overhauled organisational processes) enables the business to achieve new things and work towards their strategic goals.
The key to enabling Ramblers’ digital transformation was designing an operational data warehouse that plays an active role in reporting, authentication and real-time data processing.
